UNRWA: More than 1.3 million people are believed to have been displaced from Rafah

Gaza June 17 2024 (QJ)-More than 1.3 million people are believed to have been displaced from Rafah to other parts of Gaza in the past six weeks, according to the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA.

“UNRWA estimates that 65,000 people are sheltering in Rafah,” said UNRWA on X. “Six weeks ago there were around 1.4 million.”

UNRWA did not provide any details on where in Gaza these people were displaced.

Last week, the Norwegian Refugee Council said in a report that nearly one million people – half of Gaza’s population – had been displaced in the past month following Israel’s military operations in Rafah.

The report said it is becoming increasingly difficult for displaced people to move from Gaza, facing issues such as closed roads, congestion, fuel shortages, and transport costs that have quadrupled. It also warned of a rise in Hepatitis A cases, with solid waste collection becoming a “serious problem.”
