UNRWA: 50, 000 Children in Gaza face Acute Malnutrition
Gaza April 16, 2024 (QJ)-The UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) has reported that over 50,000 children in the Gaza Strip urgently need medical treatment for acute malnutrition.
In a statement released on Saturday, the agency highlighted the severe hunger levels in Gaza due to ongoing restrictions on humanitarian access. “With continued restrictions to humanitarian access, people in Gaza continue to face desperate levels of hunger. UNRWA teams work tirelessly to reach families with aid, but the situation is catastrophic,” the statement read.
UNICEF spokesperson James Elder described the immense difficulties in not only getting aid into Gaza but also distributing it across the war-torn coastal enclave.
The mainland crossing in Rafah has been closed since Israeli forces took control of the area early last month, exacerbating fears of famine in southern and central Gaza.
Carl Skau, the UN’s World Food Programme Deputy Executive Director, spent two days assessing the situation in Gaza this week, stating that the challenges are “like nothing I have ever seen.”
For months, right-wing Israelis have been protesting and blocking roads to prevent aid shipments from reaching Gaza, further hindering the flow of much-needed aid to the territory. the news comes as Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al Adha.
