UN to give $25 million in aid to address the ongoing flood crisis in Somalia

Mogadishu November 10, 2023 (QJ) -The humanitarian agencies of the United Nations have announced that they will give $25 million in aid to address the ongoing flood crisis in Somalia, which has affected approximately 1.2 million people.

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners estimate that 1.6 million people will need assistance during the upcoming drought period from October to December, with 1.5 million hectares of agricultural land likely to be affected, according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The newly allocated funds – $10 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and $15 million from the Somalia Humanitarian Fund – will support efforts to mitigate the impact of food shortages, address disease outbreaks, and provide nutrition assistance.

The CERF fund will assist UN agencies and their partners in helping more than 280,000 people facing the early stages of a crisis, while the $15 million from the Somalia Humanitarian Fund will support over 420,000 people.

Somalia, emerging from a historical period of conflicts, has become one of the countries facing the risks of drought, famine, and severe climate conditions exacerbated by the effects of El Niño.
