Terror groups from Somalia ‘targeting Britain’
It is claimed some young people in the UK are being targeted by Somali terror groups. Groups including al Shabaab are reportedly benefiting financially from the sale of khat – a leaf which is chewed – and then targeting young people who have been marginalised through their use of the drug.
There are a lot of youngsters from a Somali background who are addicted… and who have been segregated from wider society, who have been mentally unwell. Thoseare the youngsters who the al Shabaab, the likes of al Shabaab, are targeting.
-Abukar Awale, community group Somali Diaspora UK
Abukar Awale claimed the Somali terror group, which has pledged allegiance to the former al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden, was targeting youngsters using khat cafes, and convincing them to return to places like Somalia, where they were being radicalised.
