Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Responds to Mahiga

Hargeisa, (SDN)-The government of Somaliland has responded to recent comments made by Augustine Mahiga the UN’s special envoy to Somalia who discussed the trial and sentencing of several men that attacked a military compound in Somaliland.

Last night’s press release from Augustine Mahiga’s office stated that the sentencing is contrary to the constitution, despite the damaging attack witnessed by citizens and admissions of guilt by those involved.

Dr. Mahamed Umar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs defended Somaliland’s position from Mahiga’s criticism saying that the accused sought to destabilize Somaliland and disturb the peace. He also said that prior to the trial consultations with international insitutions took place and it was determined that blatant acts of violence and destabilization should be met with justice. He continued to say that the international community is encouraged by Somaliland’s commitment to peace.

Some critics in Somaliland question Mahiga’s motives in releasing the statement. It appears to some as a scheme to find fault in Somaliland’s autonomy and to tarnish the peaceful history of the nation.
