Somaliland: The survey of the construction of Maydh port commences – Photos
The survey of the construction of Maydh port has commenced.
The port which is approximately 75 KM north of Erigavo will serve as an import and export hub for the capital of Sanaag and the other parts of the region . The project is funded by Somaliland Development Fund.
Maydh is one of the oldest sea ports in Somaliland dating back to the 12th century AD. It is also the place where the ancestors of the majority of Somaliland people first landed in the country. Sheikh Isihaaq , the father of the Isaaq clan of Somaliland is buried there.
The construction of the port will help in the import and export of commodities to and from the Gulf States and will boost the economy of the region. Most of Sanaag businesses currently import their goods through Bosaaso port in Puntland. Livestock is also exported at Bosaasso because of the geographical distance of Berbera port and the rugged road between Burao and Erigavo.
