Somaliland: Students Protest School Fees Hike
HARGEISA—- Students At Mohamoud Ahmed Ali State secondary school on Monday trooped to the streets to protest against high school fees in state-owned institutions.
They said they chose to stage the protest in order to send a message that all was not well in the state and to kick against “bad government policies” in education sector.
The students have claimed that some of quality teachers have been shifted by Somaliland’s ministry of education.
They have also complained that the school management has informed to pay school fees through an account.
State owned vehicles were smashed by the angry students at the protest but there are no casualties reported as far as the situation is concerned.
Some of the protesters told eye witnesses that the increase in tuition fee by Somaliland’s ministry of education and having informed them to pay the fees via school account has forced them to go to the streets.
One of the major complaints that students have made clear is that the ministry of education has replaced quality teachers from the school which led them to demonstrate after all their calls fell onto the deaf ears.
The protesters have called on the minister to reinstate the shifted teachers and instructors from the Mohamoud Ahmed Ali Secondary school.
Police used live bullets and excessive force to disperse the protesters nearby the major road that goes to Hargeisa airport where the protests started.
