Somaliland: President declares state of disaster in drought-stricken areas
President of Somaliland. Ahmed M. Silanyo has declared a state of disaster in most rural parts of the country severely hit by a drought, with 70 percent of the population said to be in need of food aid, the government said in a statement late Thursday.
Declaring a state of disaster allows international donors to raise money quickly to provide food aid to Somaliland, which has said it will step up efforts of aid to avert hunger.
President Silanyo made a special speech in Parliament on March 31, regarding the drought that has stricken most rural areas in Somaliland.
Silanyo has submitted a letter to the house of national assembly asking to amend the voter registration law which has been delayed due to the drought.
President Silanyo sent congratulation to NEC and men and women in uniform for their services concerning the VR in Somaliland.
Mr. Silanyo in his speech to the parliament has commended the EU for its support to the elections.
The president has called on the nation to stand up together at times of difficulties and to support the ongoing efforts to safe those affected by the drought in rural areas.
