Somaliland: Ministry of Education Dismisses Alleged Unification of Somaliland and Somalia Schools Curriculums
Hargeisa, 31 Jan 2014 (SDN) –Somaliland’s Ministry of Education and Higher Studies has strongly dismissed rumors of uniting the primary and secondary schools Curriculum of Somaliland and Somalia.
Officials from the ministry of Education including Minister Samsam Abdi Aden, Director General of the ministry and other officials from the ministry have strongly denied the participation of a recently concluded conference held in Kenya on Education Curriculums of Somaliland and Somalia.
Local newspapers in Hargeisa have reported that Ministry of Education officials attended a conference which was intended of releasing a unified primary and secondary schools Curriculum of Somaliland and Somalia.
Minister of Education Zamsam Abdi Aden has said while speaking in a press conference held by the Ministry of education officials that Somaliland and Somalia education curriculums can’t be unified. “Somaliland and Somalia are two different countries, so their education curriculum can’t be unified. Somaliland’s children have their own history which is completely different of that of Somalia.” Minister Samsam said during the press conference.
The Director General of the Ministry of Education, Mohamed Hassan Ibrahim, who also spoke at the press conference, has said that the conference held in Kenya was concerned on discussion about how the condition of education of Somaliland will be assessed and was discussed on whether the educational aspirations and objectives of the country were on the right truck.
“We teach our children to their history including SNM’s struggle against Siyad Barre, the former dictator of Somalia, whereas Somalia give their children a curriculum included the achievements and prosperity reached in the era of the tyranny regime of Siyad Barre. It is impossible that Somaliland and Somalia curriculums to be unified.” Director said during the press conference.
