Somaliland: Foreign Minister Sa’ad Ali Shire says they’ll talk to Somalia
LONDON – Somaliland foreign minister Dr Sa’ad Ali Shire said that his government is interested in dealing with the internationally-backed weak, fragile government of Somalia in a peaceful way.
In a recent meeting with the Somaliland diaspora in London, Dr Shire said: “Usually, when you are dealing with people [such as Somalia government] you have two options: you either use military force or sit down with them and reach agreements in a peaceful way. Therefore Somaliland chose, initially though, to talk to Somalia in the presence of the international community – as impartial observers.”
“We are going sit down and talk to Somalia as equal partners; two governments that are going to discuss their interest and future relations. It is a step in the right direction, which will take us back to the pre-union era of 1960. And the international community will be present and help us achieve intended outcomes.”
The foreign minister also stated that Somaliland has made significant progress over the years and fulfilled all the requirements to become an internationally recognised state. Recognition will enable Somaliland overcome barriers to achieving full economic development for its citizens. More importantly, it will empower them gain a political voice and presence in the international arena.
Somaliland is striving to be recognised as a sovereign independent state since 1991 when they pulled out of a disastrously misgoverned, failed union with Somalia.
