Somaliland closes an office for Somalia’s E-Passport in Hargeisa

Hargeisa, Oct 07, 2013 (SDN) -Somaliland police have on Sunday closed an office in Hargeysa, the region’s capital where citizens used to apply for the Electronic Passport issued by the federal government of Somalia, RBC Radio reports. Somaliland interior minister Ali Mohamed Warancade said the police found the office which he termed as illegal agent operating in Somaliland capital to issue the E-passport of Somalia.

“We have closed illegal office in Hargeysa.” the minister said in an interview with the BBC Somali Service.  “The police also apprehended several people in connection for the office and issuing Somali passport to the citizens of Somaliland.”

He said all those arrested will be brought to the court.

Somaliland is a breakaway region on the northwest of Somalia and had declared its independence from the rest of the country in 1991 following the collapse of late Somalia regime but the region has not yet obtained any international and national recognition.

Similar to the citizens in other Somalia regions, the people in the north of Somalia have been long time using the new E-Passport of Somalia.
