Somalia’s Former Prime Minister Dies at the Age of Ninety

Minneapolis, 01 Feb 2014 (SDN) –Abdirizak Haji Hussein, who was the Prime Minister of Somalia from 1964 to 1967, has died in a hospital in Minnesota, USA on Friday afternoon, relatives and officials told Somali Current.

Late Prime Minister, Abdirizak Haji Hussein Hussein, suffered pneumonia and was hospitalized in the Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis for seven days.

His nephew, Mahdi Abdiwahab Haji Hussein, confirmed for Somali Current that the Late Prime Minister died on Friday afternoon at 4:20 local time in Minnesota.

“He has been in the hospital for a week and he was suffering from pneumonia and the doctors pronounced his death this afternoon,” Mahdi said.

Abdirizak Bihi, a Somali American community activist in Minnesota said they were planning to take the body back home and was also working with the Somali Federal Government and his family to make National funeral in Somalia.

Abdirizak was born in Galkayo in Central Somalia in 1924 and died at the age of 90. He was the second Prime Minister of Somalia nominated by the country’s first president Aden Abdulle Osman and played an important role in the formation of Somali civilian government.

The military government of Somalia arrested him in 1969 after the military coup of the civilian government.  He was then nominated to be Somalia’s ambassador to the United Nations.  Since then he has lived in the United States of America.
