Somali Government intensifies:Operation to Restore Peace and Stability in Somalia

(February 21, 2012) The Transitional Federal Government of Somalia is committed to bringing peace and stability to Somalia and will intensify the “Operation to Restore Peace and Stability across Somalia” that started on 31st December 2011 in collaboration with neighboring countries and support from International Community.

“The Operation to Restore Peace and Stability has successfully weakened Al-Shabaab and Al-Qaeda terrorist groups within Somalia. The operation has extended the safety zones and has consequently allowed a lot of displaced Somali citizens to return to their homes and receive basic services and humanitarian assistance. Our security forces with the help of AMISOM and neighboring countries are now ready to continue and intensify the operation in order to broaden safety zones to other parts of Somalia,” said Somalia Prime Minister, Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali.

Al-Shabaab recently declared that they are part and parcel of Al-Qaeda with the intent to intensify the suffering of the Somali people who have already suffered under their harsh treatments.

“The Government of Somalia has made enormous achievements towards the implementation of the Roadmap and is in the process of implementing strategies to stabilize the country, in particular, Newly Liberated areas. The aim of this is to help communities reconcile with each other and establish environments that are conducive enough for economic well being and good governance. The recapture of Beledweyne was strategic and our forces with the help of neighboring countries successfully managed to stabilize the city,” added Prime Minister Ali.

The Government of Somalia is grateful for the overwhelming support from the public; appeals for their continued support; and encourages them to stay calm during the operation. The people of Somalia have suffered enough and strongly oppose Al-Qaeda and their foreign sponsors. The Government of Somalia hopes to bring about peace and stability in its short mandate, with a grand plan for areas still under the control of Al-Qaeda in Somalia.

The Transitional Federal Government urged the International Community and aid agencies to swiftly extend humanitarian assistance to the newly liberated areas, so that people will be able to resettle in their homes as quickly as possible.
