Somali government calls for peace in Hiran region

The Somali government has issued a decree calling for the cessation of clan fighting in Hiran region, government-run Radio Mogadishu reported Friday (December 20th).

A delegation led by Minister of Natural Resources Abdirizak Omar Mohamed has been in Beledweyne since Sunday to mediate between two clans who fought in Kabahanley area over grazing land.

The government intends to return displaced families to their homes and provide the necessary humanitarian aid. It also called for the withdrawal of clan militias from Kabahanley and Defow.

Mohamed urged all sides to heed the government’s call, and asked the Somali, Ethiopian and African Union troops in the region to confront anyone suspected of carrying out destabilising activities.

For his part, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) commander in the region, Colonel Osman Doubad, said the troops under his command would assist in containing any further conflict, according to UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan.
