SA Somali blast victims returned to SA

Johannesburg, Jun 22, 2013 (SDN) –The bodies of two South Africans killed in an attack on a UN facility in Somalia have been returned to South Africa.

The plane carrying the bodies of 41-year-old Morne Lotter of Oudtshoorn and 53-year-old Alan Simpson of Port Elizabeth landed last night.

The Denel employees died when Al Shabaab militants targeted a UN Development Programme camp in Mogadishu.  They had been part of a 300 strong UN peace-keeping mission.

The State-owned arms company said its efforts are critical in the troubled region, and it will not be pulling out of Somalia following the incident.

On Thursday, Public Enterprise Minister Malusi Gigaba conveyed his condolences to the families of the Denel employees killed in Somalia.

He was “saddened” by deaths, said his spokesman Mayihlome Tshwete.

Tshwete said Gigaba had offered his condolences was in his capacity as the shareholder representative of the Denel Group.
