Netanyahu agrees to a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah
Tel Aviv November 25, 2024(QJ) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed in principle to a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah during security consultations with Israeli officials on Sunday night, according to informed sources.
The sources indicated that Israel is still finalizing the details of the agreement, which were expected to be presented to the Lebanese government on Monday.
These details, along with others, are still under discussion, and various sources have emphasized that the agreement will not be finalized until all outstanding issues are resolved.
The ceasefire deal will also need to be approved by Israel’s cabinet, which has not yet happened.
Sources familiar with the negotiations have stated that talks are progressing well, but they acknowledged that even though Israel and Hezbollah continue to exchange ceasefire terms, one wrong move could jeopardize the talks.
U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein mentioned last week in Beirut that a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon is “in our hands,” but ultimately it is a “decision for the parties involved.”
The proposal supported by the U.S. aims to achieve a 60-day cessation of hostilities, which some hope could serve as the foundation for a lasting ceasefire.
Israel launched a major military assault on Lebanon in mid-September after months of tit-for-tat attacks along the border, which started on October 8 of the previous year when Hezbollah, in coordination with Hamas and Palestinians from Gaza, attacked Israeli-controlled territory.
Since then, Israel has carried out a ground offensive, killing several Hezbollah leaders, including one of its founders, Hassan Nasrallah, and injuring thousands in bombings targeting explosive sites.
