Mo dedicates gold to twins
(KampalaSDN)LONDON- Comments from gold medallist Mo FARAH (GBR) at a media conference following the men’s 5000m final at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday.
Mo FARAH (GBR) – gold
On competing when he wife is heavily pregnant with twins:
“I was a little bit worried. As a parent you want to be there for your kids. I was worried for my wife, I really want two medals for them.”
“I got twins, so once I got one (medal), you can’t leave the other one out.”
On his inspiration:
“I’ve been doing 120 miles a week. It’s been hard and I’m tired but when you have a vision, when you have a dream, you dig in.”
“I want each of my (soon to be born) twins to have a gold medal. This is what was driving me on.”
On winning gold:
“There’s not a word to describe it. You dream of being the Olympic champion but to do it twice is unbelievable.”
“Kenenisa BEKELE (ETH) has done it twice and Lasse VIREN (FIN) too, to be part of that group is great.”
On the effect of the crowd:
“The crowd was inspiring for sure, if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have dug deep. The crowd just got louder and louder, it reminds me of a football game, the fans were like my mascot, but I just knew I had to hold off until the last lap and try not to let them pass.”
On Usain BOLT (JAM) doing the ‘Mobot’ in his honour:
“What he does for the sport is amazing, BOLT is a legend, we take him for granted. To see him do the ‘Mobot’ is amazing after breaking the world record, wow, I can’t believe he did that. It’s an honour.”
On why he did sit-ups after his win:
“BOLT did his press-ups, so I did some sit-ups to match him.”
On if he agreed with the suggestion by Sebastian COE (GBR) that he would be the greatest ever British runner if he did the 10,000m, 5000m double:
“No, they (Steve OVETT, COE, Steve CRAM, GBR) are legends. He (COE) has achieved everything, world records, Olympic medals, everything.”
On competitors from Africa:
“I lived with the guys in the past, I was a kid, I went to Kenya, I did track with them and I kept up with them so I knew I could do well. I’ve learned a lot from them. If you want something you can get it. I’ve been keeping a diary and watching my mileage. You think these guys are just untouchable, but if you believe it you can get it with hard work, self-belief and a great coach like Alberto SALAZAR (USA).”
On the pace of the race:
“The pace suited me very well, it was a tactical race.”
On the future:
“I still want to achieve more with the five kilometre and 10 kilometre, I want to collect as many medals as possible, this chance may not come again.”
On Somalian children who may look up to him:
“I’m very lucky, I came to Britain when I was just a kid, they want a chance like me. When I went to Somalia I started a charity, the Mo Farah Foundation. We deliver food and water. I know those kids want a chance like me. I’m trying to give back as much as I can.”
