Man pleads guilty in Minn. Somali terror case

MINNEAPOLIS — A Somali-American man has admitted he raised money to help send people from Minnesota to Somalia to fight with al-Shabab.

Twenty-seven-year-old Ahmed Hussein Mahamud pleaded guilty Monday to one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Mahamud admitted that in the summer of 2080, he and others raised money in Minnesota under false pretenses. He admitted they told the Somali-American community they were raising money for a local mosque and for orphans in Somalia. But instead they used the money to buy airline tickets for some of the men who went to Somalia.

Mahamud is the seventh man to plead guilty in the government’s investigation into the recruiting of at least 21 men who are believed to have left Minnesota to join al-Shabab in Somalia.
