Mahiga Stands By Somaliland’s Decision to Disengage from Talks with Somalia

Hargeisa (SDN)-The United Nations special envoy for Somalia Augustine Mahiga made an unannounced visit to the capital city of Somaliland today.

Mahiga has been opposed to European plans to bring peace to Somalia since the London conference. Most notably he protested the 6th article of the peace plan which states that Somalia and Somaliland should sit down for talks.

Somaliland recently announced plans to sit down with the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia but pulled out soon after due to a disagreement over members of the negotiation committee formed by Sheikh Shariif.

Mahiga who has set up base in Mogadishu told leaders of Somaliland to stand by their decision to disengage from the talks.

For all appearances Somaliland has taken great strides to fulfil the London agreement and sit down with Somalia’s government. Whether Somaliland’s leadership will follow Mahiga’s advice remains to be seen.
