Landmark Court Case in Borama
Borama (SDN)-The Head of Awdal region’s High Court in Borama, Cabdiraxmaan Geedi Barre sentenced 32 people to prison terms of 5-10 years and a fine of 180,000 USD for the destruction of submarine fibre optic cable that was destined to connect the city of Lughaya to internet services.
11 members of the group were sentenced to five years each and fined 180,000 USD, the remaining 21 individuals were each sentenced to ten years in prison to be followed by a lifetime of probation. Conditions of the verdict included a warning that if any of the accused interfere with the installation of the internet cable again they will be punished to the full extent of the law and will be held responsible for their actions.
The 32 accused in this criminal case were charged by the Assistant Attorney General of Awdal Region Axmed Cismaan Mirre who prosecuted the case and explained the disparity in sentences by stating that some of the accused took part directly in the destruction of the cable while others provided the means and also had motives to gain from its destruction.
