Josep Borrell, has called on all EU member states to respect the ICC decision
Brussels November 28, 2024(QJ) – The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has called on all EU member states to respect the decisions of the International Criminal Court (ICC), including the arrest warrant for Netanyahu.
“We cannot undermine the ICC. It is the only way to achieve international justice,” Borrell said.
“It is not political. It is a legal institution established by highly respected professionals in the field of judiciary.”
Although all EU member states are signatories to the ICC’s founding treaty, France stated yesterday that they believe Netanyahu has immunity from ICC actions since Israel is not a signatory to the court’s statutes. Meanwhile, Italy has stated that it is impossible to arrest Netanyahu as long as he remains the head of the Israeli government.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant last week for Netanyahu, former defense chief Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leader, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Gaza war.
Israel has announced that it will appeal the warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant.
