Iran:The Gulf States are supporting Somali Piracy

Tehran(SDN)-The Iranian news agency Fars has published a damning accusation by one of their Generals who claims that Somali Piracy is funded by some of the Gulf  States who spend millions in combating the problem.

The Iranian news agency did not elaborate how and who is supporting the Somali Piracy, but just quoted the General from the Iranian Navy.

“the pirates of the Gulf of Aden are simple fishers but their sponsors and main leaders are Sheikhs of the United Arab Emirates, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. They provide the Somalis with money, weapons and equipment.”said General Mohammad Nazzeri.

The accusations perplexed the Somali Piracy experts in both Somalia and abroad.

It is not clear why these countries would support the Pirates since they seem to suffer the most damage by the Somali piracy activities.

Experts say it is possible for some individuals may be connected to the Pirates, but how high the involvement is unclear.

A recent UN Monitoring Group lambasted Somalia’s president Shekh Shariif in supporting pirate bosses by issuing them a diplomatic Passports.

The report also said that last year saw the highest Pirate attacks to date by 237 in total.

Somalia remains without a central Government for 20 years, after the collapse of the Siad Barre regime in 1991.
