IDPs in Mogadishu Ask For Help

Mogadishu (SDN)- Internally displaced migrants who have sought refuge in Mogadishu’s urban centres have recently voiced concerns over their poor quality of life. They have expressed frustration in living conditions and cite a lack of resources. Some of the IDPs were forced to leave their homes due to last year’s drought and famine conditions while others have set up base in the Hodan neighbourhood of Benadir in order to avoid armed conflict taking place in other regions.

Somali Diaspora News travelled to Hodan to speak to the IDPs living in the makeshift camp. Several internally displaced families spoke of the medical issues they face, especially those that affect their children such as rampant malnutrition and outbreaks of measles. They requested help to deal with the health issues and the lack of potable water which together form the bulk of their immediate needs.

Families say that despite being stranded in Hodan for some time they have not received any help from government or non-governmental sources that serve the city of Mogadishu’s neighbourhoods. These developments come at a time when the majority of IDPs throughout Mogadishu are facing barriers to accessing food, shelter, clean water and medical care and cannot meet their most basic needs.
