Heavy Rains in Mogadishu Endanger IDPs

Mogadishu (SDN) –Heavy rains fell in the Somali capital of Mogadishu yesterday prompting concerns for internally displaced people living in the city.

Several internally displaced families recently interviewed by SDN in Mogadishu got in touch with our reporters and described worsening living conditions due to the rainfall. Many were living in dilapidated shacks made from scrap metal that could not hold up to the heavy winds and rain. According to the families they have nowhere to go after rain water flooded their makeshift homes.

The IDPs relocated to Mogadishu from the lower Shabelle region in search of food, water, and medical care following severe droughts in multiple regions in southern Somalia. They have been living in Mogadishu for almost a year with little support and this latest incident has further complicated their situation.

“We are asking humanitarian organizations to help us, we are stuck in Mogadishu and heavy rains have been falling since yesterday, speaking to you tonight, I don’t know where to go or where I am going to sleep because our homes are flooded and we are in a bad state” said a woman from one of the internally displaced families living in the Wadajir neighbourhood of Mogadishu in Benadir region.

The IDPs need emergency help from the public and humanitarian organizations in order to mitigate the risks they face in terms of homelessness, security, and exposure to the elements.
