Gaza famine “It is possible, if not probable,” stated FEWS NET

Gaza June 04, 2024 (QJ) -An independent group of experts has warned of the potential for famine in northern Gaza, although the ongoing conflict and restrictions on humanitarian aid have hindered the collection of data to confirm this.

“It is possible, if not probable,” stated the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) regarding the famine in Gaza.

People, including children, are dying from hunger-related causes across the region, and these conditions are likely to persist until at least July unless there is a fundamental change in the distribution of food aid, the report said.

Concerns about deadly hunger have escalated in recent months and increased after the head of the World Food Program (WFP) declared last month that northern Gaza had entered “severe famine” following nearly seven months of conflict. Experts from the United Nations later clarified that Cindy McCain, the WFP’s executive director, was expressing a personal opinion.

The declaration of famine could be used as evidence in international criminal courts and at the International Court of Justice, where Israel is facing accusations of genocide.
