G7 countries set conditions for supporting Syria
The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US are ready to support the transition to an inclusive government in Syria, as stated in a declaration by the G7 president of Italy.
“We are ready to support a transitional process… leading to a trustworthy, inclusive, non-sectarian administration that ensures respect for international law, human rights, including women’s rights, and the protection of all Syrian people,” the statement said.
“The G7 will work with and fully support the future government of Syria that adheres to these standards and the outcomes of this process,” it added.
The leaders also called on “all parties” to “maintain Syria’s territorial integrity and national unity, and to respect its sovereignty and independence.”
