Amnesty International says Israel’s war in Gaza has is genocide.
Gaza December 05, 2024(QJ) – The human rights organization Amnesty International concluded in a new report that Israel’s war in Gaza has reached the legal threshold of genocide.
The report, published on Thursday, titled “You feel like you are human”: Israel’s Genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, marks the end of months of research by Amnesty, including extensive witness interviews, analysis of “visual and digital evidence,” including satellite imagery, and statements made by senior Israeli government and military officials.
Amnesty stated that the Israeli military committed at least three out of five acts prohibited by the 1948 Genocide Convention, including indiscriminate killings of civilians, causing serious physical and mental harm, and “intentionally inflicting living conditions calculated to bring about physical destruction” on Palestinians living in Gaza.
Israel described Amnesty International’s report as “false” on Thursday.
Israeli officials have consistently denied allegations of genocide in Gaza, claiming they acted in self-defense following the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, and that criticism of their war is anti-Semitic.
The Amnesty report, however, also states that crimes recorded in Gaza mostly “preceded the orders encouraging their implementation.”
More than 100 statements by Israeli military and government officials were reviewed in the report on the “dehumanization of Palestinians, calling for or justifying acts of genocide or other crimes against them.”
Of these statements, 22 made by senior officials responsible for managing the Gaza war “appeared to call for, or justify, acts of genocide, providing direct evidence of genocidal intent.”
