Al-Shabab Claims Responsibility of Series of Bomb Explosions in Somalia capital

Mogadishu, Sep 05, 2013 (SDN) — Somalia’s Al Qaeda linked Al-shabab militants has claimed through a Twitter message the responsibility of today’s series of bombings in Mogadishu.  Series of bomb explosions were heard in numerous districts of Somalia capital, Mogadishu on Wednesday night as the government security forces launched massive operation.

The explosions which seemed to be related were heard during evening hours on Wednesday night.

Two bomb explosions hit near the main Mogadishu airport and the busy KM4 junction where the Somali police commissioner and security forces were.  No casualties were reported.

Residents reported that other hand grenades were also targeted to Hodan, Yaaqshiid and Hamarweyne neighborhoods in the capital.

The Somali Police Spokesman Gen Mohamed Yusuf Madaale said one suicide bomber was killed by the security forces before he has approached a police checkpoint at KPP junction of Hodan neighborhood.

The man was later identified as Abdiraham Diiriye from Qoryoley district. According to the police sources the man who was in his 20s attempted to throw a hand grenade to the police before he was shot and killed.

The police spokesman also confirmed the arrest of dozens of Al Shabab suspects during a night hunt operation in the main Bakaro market.
