Somaliland: Minister of Aviation Launches Reconstruction of Bur’ao Airport
Bur’ao, (SDN)-Somaliland’s Minister of Aviation Mahamuud Haashi Abdi made the announcement today that the ministry is poised to begin the reconstruction of the airport in Bur’ao city
The Minister said that plans to rebuild the airport are complete. The project will cost 500,000 USD and the public is expected to be the largest contributor to the project.
Although most people in Bur’ao are anticipating the start of construction some residents who live on or near the former airport grounds are not. The Minister has threatened to forcibly remove settlements that have emerged on the outskirts of the airport in recent years.
“The airport grounds in the city of Bur’ao are not new, it has always existed and has been among the largest airports in the country” said the Minister during an interview with the BBC. He continued to say that “the airport’s main runway will be 300 metres long stretching east and west, landings and takeoffs will be from those directions and there cannot be any buildings or settlements that may obstruct the safe operation of the airport”
