U.S. announces Horn of Africa Aid
Nairobi (SDN) – The United States government announced more emergency aid to the horn of Africa to the tune of 120 million USD. The money is intended to help address some of the lasting effects of the 2011 drought and famine.
A White House spokesperson stated that the money is going to those most affected by the drought in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. The subsequent famine led to an unprecedented refugee crisis in the horn and internally displaced millions of people who remain homeless. Almost nine million people remain at risk if they do not receive help.
The environment has yet to rebound from the disastrous drought and crops are not expected to yield sufficient amounts to feed the population in the horn of Africa. Although heavy rains have been reported in Somaliland, Puntland and parts of Somalia in the last week, the rainy season has been significantly delayed and it may be too little too late for communities that expected a recovery.
