Somali Government Condemns the Killing of MSF aid workers

Mogadishu 30 December 2011- The Prime Minister of the Transitional Federal Government, Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, confirmed that the perpetrator of yesterday’s shooting of two aid workers would be brought to justice. Somali Government condemns the bar-baric killing of MSF Aid Workers and will bring the criminal to Justice.
Two international aid workers, an Indonesian and a Belgian, were shot and killed in a compound run by Medecins Sans Frontieres in Mogadishu, yesterday. At the scene of the shooting the killer was arrested carrying a gun. An investigation is currently underway by the police.
Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali said: “I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families of the two aid workers and thank them, on behalf of all Somalis, for their enormous contribution to making the lives of Somalis better.
“This year’s response from the international aid community to the disaster in Somalia ought to be commended. We welcome those who are willing to come to Somalia to work for the benefit of Somalis.
“This is a callous attack and a tragic example of an isolated incident and does not reflect any increased risk to international aid workers. I want to reassure the international aid community that we will do everything we can to enable foreign aid workers to operate safely in Somalia.
“We in the Transitional Government, in coordination with African Union Mission forces, are working hard to improve security in the city. The person who is responsible for this abhorrent crime will be brought to justice at the earliest opportunity.”
