Hamas leader assassinated in Tehran

Tehran July 31, 2024(QJ) -The leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed early Wednesday morning in Iran, as confirmed by the Hamas organization and the Tehran government, who threatened Israel with retaliation for the act. This event further intensifies the already escalating tensions in the Middle East region.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed Haniyeh’s death, just hours after he attended the inauguration ceremony of the new president of Iran. They announced that they were investigating the incident.
Ismail Haniyeh, who resided in Qatar, served as the diplomatic face of Hamas, representing the organization on international stages, especially during the current sensitive period of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
In a statement, the armed wing of Hamas said that the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh “will change the face of the war.” Iran also vowed to avenge the attack that took place in its capital.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, stated that Israel has committed actions that warrant severe punishment and that Tehran must avenge the death of the Hamas leader killed in their capital.
There has been no comment or claim of responsibility from Israel, aside from the Israeli military’s statement that they are assessing the situation.
Qatar, which plays a central role in mediating between Hamas and Israel, strongly condemned the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, calling it a dangerous step that exacerbates the situation.
Turkey, China, and Russia also strongly condemned the act.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas likewise strongly condemned the attack.
This assassination occurred less than 24 hours after Israel claimed to have killed a Hezbollah commander responsible for an attack on the Golan Heights, which is occupied by Israel.
