Somalia: Juba River floods farmlands in Gedo region

Kismayo November 03, 2023 (QJ) -The Juba River has flooded in the districts of Luuq and Doolow in the Gedo region of Southern Somalia, and the situation is reported to be severe.

The flooding, which began recently, has inundated farms and neighborhoods in Luuq and Doolow, displacing many families. Floodwaters have submerged homes and are affecting the lives of the people residing there.
Significant damage has been reported due to the flooding, with extensive destruction of houses, farmlands, and other property. The affected areas are facing a major humanitarian crisis.
Additionally, emergency efforts are underway to rescue and assist the affected population. Relief efforts are being made to provide food, shelter, and support to the displaced families.

This marks the first time in 30 years that such severe flooding has occurred in Luuq and Doolow. The government has called on the population to evacuate the low-lying areas near the Shabelle and Juba rivers due to the potential risk of flooding during the rainy season.
