Puntland President Rejects traditional leaders election proposal

Garowe November 03, 2023 (QJ) -The president of Puntland, Said Deni, has rejected the recent statement issued by Puntland’s traditional leaders, who claimed that a one-person, one vote cannot be implemented in the region on time and called for a return to the previous electoral system.

A press release from the presidency stated that Puntland is committed to the principles of democracy and the electoral system that allows one person, one vote.

The presidency also mentioned that the Council of Ministers had approved changes to the electoral law and that these changes would be forwarded to the House of Representatives.

President Deni emphasized his commitment to the people electing their representatives, including members of the House of Representatives and the President and Vice President, following the guidance of the electoral commission.

However, opposition groups have recently criticized the statement, viewing it as a maneuver by President Deni to extend his term in office. The opposition fears that the ongoing political tension in the region may escalate.
