Environmental conference kicks off in Somaliland

Hargeisa – A large conference aimed at addressing environmental problems  facing the Horn of Africa region officially kicks off in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland today.

The gathering is due to run for three days staring from day one.

The focus of meeting is to discuss the major things that pose a real threat to the environment.

Barwako Voluntary Organization (BVO) is organizing the three days summit in Hargeisa in conjunction with Horn of Africa Regional Environmental Network.

Deputy chairman of Horn of Africa Regional Environmental Network, Abdirahman Mohamed Ahmed has said that attendees will discuss on environmental problems ranging from cutting trees, illegal poaching of wild life, shortage of water and to major causes of droughts.

More than 120 delegations from Africa and the world have gathered in Somaliland including Dr Rajendra K Pachauri who is an Indian environmental expert who won the Nobel prize for protecting environment in Nepal.

 

Ms. Khadra Omar, as the chairwoman of BVO has made the opening speech by welcoming the attendees to the environment conference.

She hopes that the outcome of gathering will be a solution to many environmental problems.

Somaliland Minister of foreign affairs, Dr. Sa’ad Ali Shire who delivered a speech at the gathering has highlighted the importance of the meeting since 80% of its population live in rural areas.

Somaliland Deputy President Abdirahman Saylici has said that the the outcome will help protection of Somaliland environment.

He said that the current government has put much efforts in place in tackling environmental problems.
