East Africa: Milestone Reached On Ethio-Djibouti Railway
The Ethio-Djibouti Railway Project under construction by two Chinese companies, recently reached an 87pc milestone, said Getachew Betru, CEO of the Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC). He added that he expects completion in the next few months.
The 756Km electric-powered railway connecting the two East African countries has been contracted by China Railway Group (CREC) and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the former constructing the Sebeta/Addis Ababa to Miesso section and the latter the section from Miesso to Djibouti port. Stating that progress of the project has been very good, the CEO commended the contractors and parties associated with the project.
Getachew recalled that 250 students had been trained in China in the railway sector, and said the project carried out by the Chinese companies plays a role in technology and knowledge transfer which is also a sign of good Ethio-Chinese relations.
The Ethio-Djibouti Railway project is expected to play a significant role in Ethiopia’s import-export trade and as well as in the economic cooperation between neighbours, contributing to regional integration.
