Breaking News: Malaysia Confirms Plane Wreckage Came From Missing Flight 370

malaysiaWednesday, August 5, 2015-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak confirmed that a jet part found on an island near Africa came from Malaysia Airlines’ Flight 370, the first physical link to the jetliner that vanished almost 17 months ago.

Investigators have “conclusively” linked the piece to the missing aircraft, Najib said early Thursday at a briefing in Kuala Lumpur.

The debris validates authorities’ hypothesis that the plane crashed in a remote stretch of the Indian Ocean southwest of Australia. But the discovery of the piece thousands of kilometers away doesn’t pinpoint where the Boeing Co. 777 took its fatal plunge in March 2014 with 239 people on board — and why it strayed so far from its Kuala Lumpur-to-Beijing route.

The part found on Reunion island is a flaperon, a movable panel on the rear of the wing. It can be moved to expand the wing’s size during takeoff and landing. It was sent from Reunion, a French territory, to a government laboratory in Toulouse for examination, along with a suitcase found nearby.
