Kenya: Somali Man Denies Having Explosives

A man was charged yesterday with having explosives and detonating cords.

Ahmed Abdullahi denied this and seven other charges levelled against him.

He was arrested on March 13 at Makongeni police road block in Thika town on his way to Nairobi.

The court heard that Abdullahi had a 614g explosive.

He was also charged with committing an act intended to cause grievous harm and being in Kenya illegally.

He is a Somali.

Abdullahi was also accused of having electric detonators, which he allegedly intended to use to commit a terrorist act.

The prosecution said he committed the offence on March 13 in Mandera county.

The prosecution said on November 22 last year, by false pretence, he procured registration as a Kenyan citizen in Wajir county.

Magistrate Annah Ndungu rejected his bail application on the grounds that his nationality is in doubt.

He will remain in custody until his hearing on April 20.
