Sioux Falls Recognizes Man’s Effort In Somali Community

SIOUX FALLS, SD -Sioux Falls recognized the efforts of one man who is trying to help a growing population transition to American Culture.The day belongs to Yusuf Hassan. Mayor Mike Huether read a proclamation about what Hassan does for the city and its expanding Somali population.

“I’m so proud of working with the communities here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with the various ethnics, various cultures. Working with them the way it’s supposed to be,” Hassan said.

Attorney Rich Engels first met Hassan years ago and has been amazed with by the Kenya native’s role in his new home.

“Whatever they need, people in this community, he’s always there to help. So I thought it was important to bring him to the mayor’s attention and get him some recognition and that’s what we’ve done today,” Engels said.

Hassan works with Somalis in the area by helping with social services, getting social security cards and teaching the native language. He also acts as translator for many in the community that don’t speak English.

“Imagine not speaking English and trying to communicate with your doctor, so that’s a big need that he’s filled as well,” Engels said.

Hassan moved to Sioux Falls over nine years ago to be closer to family. He considers the city a great place to live with a growing diverse population, and he looks forward to helping more people in the future.

“I will be working with the people in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, strongly and hoping that Sioux Falls is going to be a great place and staying in Sioux Falls the rest of my life,” Hassan said.

Hassan has seven children going to school in the community; the oldest one is attending Discovery Elementary school.
