2024 was the deadliest year for journalists, with 124 killed, most of them in Gaza due to Israeli military actions.
The highest number of journalist killings in 2024 has been recorded, with Israel being responsible for more than two-thirds of these deaths, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in its annual report.
The CPJ, which announced its findings on Wednesday, stated that at least 124 journalists were killed in 18 countries last year, making it the deadliest year for media workers since the committee began recording data over 30 years ago.
The previous deadliest year for journalists was 2007, when 113 journalists were killed, with nearly half of those deaths occurring during the Iraq war, as reported by the press freedom organization.
“Today marks the most dangerous time for journalists in CPJ’s history,” said the committee’s head, Jodie Ginsberg, in a statement.
“The Gaza war is unprecedented in its impact on journalists, highlighting a significant decline in adherence to international norms protecting journalists in conflict zones, but it is far from the only place where journalists are at risk,” she added.
At least 85 journalists were killed by Israeli military forces in 2024 during the Israel-Gaza conflict, the CPJ reported, with 82 of those killed being Palestinians.
Human rights organizations have also accused Israel of attempting to obstruct investigations into the killings, blaming journalists for their own deaths, and failing to hold its special forces accountable for the deaths of numerous media workers.
